Katerina Gimon (b. 1993) is widely recognized as one of the new leading Canadian composers of contemporary choral music. You may be familiar with her haunting and energetic setting of “Fire”, scored for both SSAA and SATB choir. Gimon’s arrangement of “Apple Tree” – originally written and performed by AURORA, a Norwegian singer/songwriter – is yet another piece that I think works just as well for SSAA ensembles as it does SATB. The lyrics address the urgency of the global climate crisis, and they represent thoughts and dreams of young people who hope to save the world and take care of its children. Students will love the modern, pop-influenced style of singing, the rhythmically driven lines, and the percussive elements. Because it occasionally breaks into 8 part divisi, you’ll want to make sure you have enough strong singers in each section to hear the dissonant harmonies. This is a fabulous piece to add timbral diversity to your concert program. Singers and audience members will be moving and grooving!
