Gretchen Anderson is a retired elementary music teacher in the Red Wing Community. She is a wonderful advocate of the arts, and a huge supporter of the Red Wing Public School’s choral department. Gretchen is the adult choir director and youth music director at United Lutheran Church in Red Wing, and an accompanist for both the middle school and high school choirs in Red Wing. Though Gretchen is brought in as an accompanist, she does so much more than accompany. During Solo/Ensemble season, Gretchen comes into class routinely and pulls students to work through their pieces. She is also very knowledgeable in world music, with a huge passion for African Folk Music. When I program traditional African folk literature, Gretchen will come into class with authentic instruments – many of which she received while working closely with Sowah Mensah (Ghanaian Folk Musician, composer, and Musicologist) – and will accompany and teach students how to play the instruments. Additionally, Gretchen is a big supporter of our music booster program. When I finish a rehearsal or concert, Gretchen is always quick to provide a smile and a pat on the back, and will offer constructive feedback when necessary. She cares deeply about our students and the greater Red Wing Community. She is truly a gem, and the Red Wing choral community is very lucky to have her support.
