I love this piece for entry level TB singers. It includes piano accompaniment with hand drum and has opportunities for unison, two part, and optional three part singing (or keep it two part and feature a solo voice or small group). I love the flexibility the piece offers. The text explores themes of identity, self expression, and the importance of valuing individuality. I think it’s an important text for adolescent singers to explore.

Text:
Far in the distance I hear a sound that I’ve heard before.
Wondering what it could be, I’m listening longing for more.
Rhythms that float to my ears are starting to echo within me,
Making a mark on my heart to the beat of a different drum.

The rhythm I hear is my own and though it is different I’ll play it.
I’ll carry the beat in my heart and share so that everyone hears it.
Sing me a song that is yours and I’ll play my rhythm beside you.
Both of us moving today to the beat of a different drum.
