It’s my honor to present the Advocate for Choral Excellence Award for the Northeast District of ACDA-MN to Don Schraufnagel.
Don Schraufnagel has served as the Facility Manager and Technical Director of Weber Music Hall at the University of Minnesota Duluth for over two decades. In that time, he has helped make Weber one of the most beloved performance spaces in the Twin Ports—not only because of its stunning acoustics (and if you’ve sung there, you know, and if you haven’t, you should add it to your list), but because of the care, attention, and excellence that Don brings to every performance.
From world-renowned ensembles like Voces8, Chanticleer, Cantus, and VocalEssence to local groups like the Twin Ports Choral Project, Arrowhead Chorale, Borealis Chamber Artists, and, of course, the UMD choirs, Don has welcomed every ensemble with the same professionalism and commitment to quality. Thanks to Don, every performer who steps into Weber Music Hall is met with warmth, technical excellence, and a genuine desire to make their performance the best it can be.
Former UMD DCA Richard Robbins recalls:
“Don always went above and beyond to make sure that the choirs sounded fantastic. He treated Weber with the respect of someone who’s not only an expert in his field, but also truly passionate about his work. He really loves what he does, and he loves supporting students and colleagues.”
Richard also shared one of his favorite memories from the COVID era, when he and Don worked together to stage a series of outdoor concerts. Richard Said: “It was such a crazy time,” he said, “but Don rolled up his sleeves and got it done. I still smile when I think about those concerts.”
Another former UMD DCA, Ryan Deignan, shared:
“Don has supported thousands of school and community performances with care and excellence. He’s mentored generations of students in concert production, audio work, and hospitality. He loves music, he loves people—and he’s always up for a good chat.”
Another anecdote Richard shared was when the director of Chanticleer came up to him after a concert and said, “You know, you’re really lucky to have that guy.”
And we are. We are lucky to have had that guy behind the scenes, lifting up our work and ensuring that the music—our music—could shine.
Don isn’t able to be here with us today, but he sends his heartfelt thanks. In his words:
“Thank you for presenting me with the ACDA ACE Award. I will cherish it all the days of my life.”
Don, this award is a small token of our deep gratitude. You are, in every way, an advocate for choral excellence. Thank you for your years of service, mentorship, stewardship, good humor, and your unwavering dedication to this community.
