Associate Artistic Director


Associate Artistic Director of The St. John’s Boys’ Choir (the “Associate Artistic Director”)

Function of the job:

The Associate Artistic Director serves in a supportive role of maintaining the musical quality of The St. John’s Boys’ Choir. The Associate Artistic Director works closely with the Artistic Director in the overall musical and social development of the choirboys.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Associate Artistic Director is the primary director of the Junior Varsity and is particularly charged with the organization, programming and scheduling of this choir.

The Associate Artistic Director shall assist the Artistic Director as necessary and work closely with other music staff in the areas of music literacy. The Associate Artistic Director, in cooperation with the Artistic Director, shall be a part of the audition and selection process of new boys for the Training Choir. The Associate Artistic Director will also assist in the development and execution of community engagement programs, festivals, and camps.

In addition, the Associate Artistic Director is responsible and shall participate in: monitoring good behavior, physical set-up and dismantling of music rooms, supervision/safety of boys, chaperoning tours/special events, staff development and support of the volunteer operations of The St. John’s Boys’ Choir.

The Associate Artistic Director reports to the Artistic Director.


The Associate Artistic Director should have strong vocal/choral pedagogy skills; have conducting and music literacy competency; the ability to teach children; strong public relations skills; and strong managerial skills.


The following minimum qualifications are desirable for the Associate Artistic Director:

1. Baccalaureate degree in Music. A degree in Music Education is preferred.
2. A background working with children, their parents, and adults in a nonprofit/arts/education operation.
3. Demonstrated experience in collaborative personnel management.
4. Demonstrated experience building positive working relationships internally and externally.
5. Demonstrated experience in artistic programming.
6. Basic keyboard skills, sufficient to lead a rehearsal with young singers. Advanced keyboard proficiency is preferred.

The following abilities are required:

1. Oral Comprehension – The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
2. Written Comprehension – The ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.
3. Problem Sensitivity – The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
4. Speech Clarity – The ability to speak clearly so others can understand you.
5. Speech Recognition – The ability to identify and understand the speech of another person.
6. Written Expression – The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.
7. Inductive Reasoning – The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).
8. Deductive Reasoning – The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
9. Fluency of Ideas – The ability to come up with several ideas about a topic (the number of ideas is important, not their quality, correctness, or creativity).
10. Ability to Drive – The ability and the appropriate license to drive a motor vehicle.
11. Physical Abilities – The ability to stand, sit, lift up to 40 pounds, twist, bend, maneuver equipment and musical apparatus.

A background check will be required for this position.

The position is part-time, working primarily nights and weekends.
