Chancel Choir and Handbell Ensemble Director – Minnetonka Campus

The Chancel Choir and Handbell Ensemble Director will collaborate in the development and share in the leadership of the worship life and music ministry for Bethlehem Lutheran Church Twin Cities – Minnetonka Campus. This is done in partnership with the Director of Music, the pastoral staff, and other team members so that those who participate in this community are fed in worship and experience delight and meaning in encountering God’s gift of music.

Collaborates with: Director of Music, Minnetonka campus organist and accompanist, pastors, and ministry leaders

Hours: Part-time, salaried, 15 hours per week (September-May)

FLSA classification: Exempt

Reports to: Director of Music

Objectives/Accountability

• Maintain and cultivate the music ministry at the Minnetonka campus through the Chancel Choir and Handbell Ensemble.
• Cultivate musical growth as well as faith formation through music for the ensemble members.
• Enrich and enliven the worship experience at the Minnetonka campus through the creative programming of choral and handbell anthems.

Responsibilities & Tasks

Conducting the Chancel Choir

• This includes the proper selection of anthems for the ensemble
• Care and upkeep of the choral library at the Minnetonka campus (including online database of anthems)
• Actively seek out new members to join the choir
• Lead weekly rehearsals on Wednesday evenings during the program year (Sept-May)
• Lead the choir in worship on Sunday mornings (September to May) and during seasonal services like Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, etc.

Conducting the Minnetonka Handbell Ensemble

• This includes the proper selection of anthems for the ensemble
• In coordination with the Director of Music, update and upkeep of the handbell music library located at the Minneapolis campus.
• Actively seek out new members to join and grow the ensemble
• Lead weekly rehearsals on Tuesday evenings during the program year (Sept-May)
• Lead the handbell choir in worship on Sunday mornings (September to May) and during seasonal services like Christmas Eve.
• Provide proper care and maintenance for the handbells through our account with Malmark

Coordination of Guest Musicians

• Reach out to and communicate with guest musicians when the need arises or when coordinated with the Director of Music. This includes the following:

o Guest instrumentalists or soloists for choral anthems
o Guest musicians for the offering time on Sundays when the choir or handbells are not present in worship
o Guest musicians for liturgical holidays (Reformation, Easter, etc.)

• Candidates that have piano and/or organ playing experience will have the option to play on Sunday mornings when the Minnetonka campus organist and accompanist is unavailable. Additional compensation will be provided in those situations.

Qualifications

• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Conducting, Music Performance, or Music Education OR commensurate amount of prior ministry experience within church music ministry.
• Minimum of 1-3 years of prior conducting experience within a music ministry setting.
• Ability to work well with a team
• A heart for service
