Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd (ELCA) seeks a Director of Worship and Music to plan and lead the worship and music life of the congregation, direct choral ensembles (adult and high school), collaborate with and provide leadership for other staff musicians (bell choir, youth choir, pre-school choir, and organist). Also serve as a member of a dedicated and creative pastoral staff and lay leadership team. This position is half-time.

Requirements for this position include:

  • BA or higher in music performance, music education and/or church music, with an emphasis on vocal music and choral conducting
  • Knowledge of and support for basic tenets of Lutheran theology as understood by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and this congregation
  • Understanding of Lutheran liturgical forms and hymnody in a broad range of styles (including traditional, multi-cultural, newly composed, etc.)
  • Candidate should possess the ability to work creatively and collaboratively with pastoral and lay staff to provide worship and music that speaks to all ages and backgrounds
  • Candidate should be comfortable with and enthusiastic about working with singers and musicians of all ages and abilities, from preschool age through adult, and must be committed to their musical development and participation in worship
  • Some skill in music composition/arranging, and experience with music notation software (Finale, etc.) would be useful and welcome


Planning (Sundays and Festival/Special Services):

  • Using scripture tests and planning documents, discern/determine the theme or emphasis for each Sunday worship service
  • Choose hymns and occasional music (anthems, etc.) that reflect the given service theme, as well as special occasions (baptism, confirmation, feast days and commemorations, etc.)
  • Foster, rotate, and maintain a repertoire of new and familiar hymns and liturgical settings throughout the year
  • Gather title/composer/lyric/copyright information on hymns and musical offerings from organist (including guest organists) and other music ensemble directors
  • Submit proposed worship outlines to staff for suggestions, changes or approval
  • Create/acquire music graphics as needed for bulletins
  • Proofread bulletin drafts and communicate changes, if any


  • Lead congregational singing (cantor)
  • Direct adult choir (Good Shepherd), high school choir (Cantare) and instrumental music as scheduled
  • Consult on technical aspects of worship as needed

  • Create seasonal choir performance schedule in consultation with other ensemble directors
  • Choose repertoire for adult and high school choirs
  • Plan and lead weekly and extra (if needed) rehearsals for each choir
  • Communicate regularly, via email and/or test message, with choir members and families regarding schedules and plans

Related Responsibilities and Activities

  • Participate in weekly staff meetings
  • Consult, coordinate with, assist staff colleagues, congregational leaders and members as needed
  • Lead Sunday School music
  • Serve as music leader for Summer Vacation Bible School
  • Occasionally write for congregational communications
  • Occasionally provide/create musical arrangements, transpositions for choirs, soloists, instrumentalists, etc. as needed

Salary and Benefits

This position is half-time. Salary and Benefits would be calculated and pro-rated utilizing Minneapolis Synod guidelines based on experience and education.
